Working for GE
Working for General Electric has its ups and downs. You get great benefits, health care and dental is excellent. They have a preferred option that makes it cheaper. Raises are about 3 to 3 1/2 a year if you get one. There are a couple of drawbacks though. One, too much management. Too many people trying to make decisions. Two, they have this barbaric way of evaluating people. Say a department has 30 employees, the manager has to rank all of them. Highly valued, Meets expectations, or Less Effective. Now say all the managers 30 employees are great workers for the year. Under the GE ranking system, it does not matter if all the employees completed their jobs well, he has to give a couple of them a Less Effective. So the manager has to find some faults in a couple of employees and give them the less effective. This seems very unfair and does not breed a teamwork environment. Less effective means you will not get a raise. |
